Maru Sushi Opens in Kalamazoo

Michigan-based Maru Sushi recently opened its sixth restaurant in the Depot, next to HopCat and Cherry Tree Financial in downtown Kalamazoo. Owner Robert Song worked with PlazaCorp to design a space that is distinctly Maru without losing the building’s rustic charm. The second floor was removed, leaving a light-filled space that is two-stories high and features the original brick walls and exposed wood beams. The freight doors and hardware were refinished and re-hung to harken the 100+ year-old building’s warehouse roots.

The décor is the perfect backdrop for Song’s distinctive menu, which blends classic sushi with a modern twist. The food is made from local ingredients and wild-caught fish wherever possible, and the curated wine list and carefully crafted cocktails complement the food. If you don’t care for the idea of raw fish, the rolls include tempura (fried) seafood and vegetarian options, and you will find Teriyaki chicken and beef on the menu as well.

Be sure to check their website for happy hour food & drink specials. It would be a good idea to call ahead for reservations, especially on weekends.
