There are two special events occurring over the next several months at downtown Kalamazoo’s Shakespeare’s Pub. On May 30, 2013, Shakespeare’s Pub will be celebrating its inaugural IPA day. This special event will celebrate the popular India Pale Ale style of beer with 40 different IPA offerings on Tap.
Then on July 19, 2013, Shakespeare’s will celebrate its tenth anniversary. In anticipation of the anniversary event, the owners of the pub, Scott Makohn and Ted Vadella, have been working to bring back some polish to the pub. Over the last couple months, they have upgraded the top floor bathrooms and have also replaced flooring, transitioning from the original carpet to a durable vinyl wood laminate. When asked about “what’s on tap” for the anniversary celebration, Makohn said, “…we will have 44 different beers on tap – all of which have never before been tapped in Kalamazoo, and there will be free live music on the lower level.”
Shakespeare’s Pub opened its doors in the Shakespeare building located at 241 E. Kalamazoo Avenue on July 19, 2003. Throughout the years, it has been a popular gathering spot for folks of all ages. The pub caters to many types of people and groups; there are televisions around the bar for the sports crowd, and activities such as trivia, arcade games, billiard tables, dartboards, and shuffleboards for more competitive types. The full menu attracts the business lunch crowd and after church folks, the quiet corners and outdoor patios allow for intimate discussions, and the pub’s size easily accommodates large groups.
Makohn and Vadella continue to reinvest in the property. In 2006, they expanded from using a little more than half of the top floor of the Shakespeare building to using the whole top floor; at that time they also undertook building a large patio area on the west side of the building. In 2010, they remodeled the basement space formerly used by comedy clubs Gary Fields and the Laughing Post into a live entertainment venue. Their Michigan-centric beer selection has grown to 44 beers on tap (third largest amount of beers on tap in the state of Michigan). The pub also offers a rotating selection of bottled beers and a nice collection of bottled spirits. Shakespeare’s Pub can be found online at http://shakespearespub.com.
