Lofts at Ironworks (f/k/a Arcadia Lofts)
203 N. Rose Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49007
New redevelopment of the beautiful historic Lawrence & Chapin Iron Works building. Located at 203 N. Rose St., the building was constructed between 1870 and 1872 in the Second Empire architectural style, featuring a beautiful slate mansard roof. The roof design includes gable end dormers with windows and a central larger dormer with architectural accents. A four-story addition was added to the rear of the building in 1906 using post and beam construction. In 1928, Michigan United Railways moved their interurban station from Portage Road to Rose Street. The tracks were along the north side of the building, where the courtyard is now. The building continued as a train station until 1928 when both the Grand Rapids and Battle Creek Urban Railways lines were abandoned. The building became the original home of Vermeulen’s Furniture, a Kalamazoo mainstay, where they remained until the 1990’s. Since that time, the buildings were expanded and used as administrative offices for a number of businesses, as part of the larger development project, known as the Arcadia Commons Complex that also includes the building next door located at 245 N. Rose.
This redevelopment effort saw several significant initiatives: a new downtown campus for Kalamazoo Valley Community College; the relocation and expansion of the Museum; the opening of Arcadia Creek to create a water feature and remove the flood plain status in the area; and the addition of a parking deck to serve the various uses.
Today, the Arcadia Commons Complex encompasses both sides of the Arcadia Creek, spanning the entire block from Water Street to Eleanor. It’s a vibrant area serving as ideal backdrop for this exciting new project which will boast both residential and commercial space.
